Can you paint brake drums with hammerite?

Registered. I painted my drums in Hammerite bright blue to match the Caspian Blue car colour a while back and they look great (in my opinion). From previous experience, they will last for a few years as there is very little heat emitting from the rear drums.

Can you powder coat brake drums?

Powder coating is definately better. It resists rust better than ANY paint, and keeps its color generally better as well. If you have heat exposure though, such as on brake drums or rotors, they will fare worse. High heat breaks down the powder coating.

Why are my brake drums Rusty?

Some forms of rust in a vehicle braking system are normal, and no cause for alarm. But not to worry—this form of rust is no cause for alarm. Since it’s a thin layer and exists only at the surface of the steel rotor, it will disappear after a few moments of driving as the brake pads rub it off.

Do you need high temp paint for brake drums?

It really depends how you use the car. If it is a daily driver, you will probably not hear the drums enough to burn off even regular paint, not to mention high heat. If the car is a track car or you live in the mountains, where you are using brakes constantly, than paint becomes a poor choice.

Does painting calipers void warranty?

Painting rims or calipers won’t void your warranty. Brakes are wear items anyway.

How much does it cost to paint a caliper red?

For painted calipers, you can expect to pay between $250 and $450 to have them professionally painted (and significantly more for specialty paint and decals) and under $50 to paint them yourself if you already have the appropriate tools.

Do you need to prime brake calipers before painting?

The answer is yes, you want to clean and prep even new calipers (or anything you paint) as well as prime. Otherwise you can just lightly sand the new caliper with medium to fine sandpaper, like 600-1200 grit. Clean off with some brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and then use primer for best results.

How do I stop my drum brakes from rusting?

Brake drums tend to rust as they are mostly just plain steel. Your best bet is to sand the off rust as clean as possible then spray a anti-rust high heat resistant enamel (like BBQ paint) to prevent the rust from building again.
