Getting Thorn used to involve a Quest It pretty much required you to have two pals who were also committed to doing it, and to dying an awful lot so you all could finally have Thorn. Nowadays, thanks to the Destiny Content Vault, a lot of what you needed to do the original quest has been cut out.
How do I get the exotic thorn quest?
Start the Thorn quest by finding the camp in the Salt Mines. Visit Banshee-44 in the Tower. Complete destination bounties on Io, defeat Warlocks in Crucible matches, or complete Nightfalls. Complete destination bounties on Titan, defeat Titans in Crucible matches, or complete Blind Well runs.

While the Thorn quest itself isn’t too difficult, offering lots of options for how you can clear most of its steps, it does culminate in one very tough mission: a much more difficult version of the Strike Savathun’s Song on Titan.

With the removal of exotic bounties, there are no ways to specifically target Thorn. However, you can run year 1 content (raids like Vault of Glass or Crota’s End, or the Prison of Elders) all of which have a chance to reward Year 1 exotics. Finally, Xur sometimes sells legacy exotic engrams for 36 strange coins.
