What is the Indie Next List?
The Indie Next Lists are monthly and seasonal lists of independent booksellers’ favorite new handsells. Anyone who works at a bookstore belonging to the American Booksellers Association is eligible to recommend their favorites! Nominations are accepted through Edelweiss, NetGalley, the ABA’s online form, or email.
How do you nominate for an Indie Next List?
There are three ways for ABA member booksellers to nominate titles to the Indie Next List:
- Complete the form on this page.
- On Edelweiss, go to the book page, click on “Review,” write a review, and under the “Nominate” section, select “Indie Next.” Unfortunately, clicking “Much Love” does not count as a nomination.
How does the Indie Next List Work?
Monthly Indie Next List printed fliers are sent to members via the Red Box, and are available digitally for download. Each listing includes a bookseller blurb and complete title information. The Indie Next List is also featured on IndieCommerce sites and IndieBound.org.
What is IndieBound?
IndieBound is a program of the American Booksellers Association (ABA), a trade association representing thousands of independent bookstores. The purpose of the site is primarily to help customers find indie locations and purchase from independent bookstores.
What does indie stand for?

“Indie” is short for “independent.” Independently released music is not directly financially dependent on any of the four major labels (WMG, Sony BMG, EMI and Universal). “Indie” does not refer to a style of music; it refers to the financial circumstances of its distribution.
Who owns IndieBound?
IndieBound, the marketing movement developed by ABA, celebrates independent bookstores and supports localism.
How do I submit to Indie Next?
To nominate a book*, click the “Give Feedback” button from the book page or on your Shelf. Once you’re on the Opinions page click Yes (as seen below) to nominate the book for the Indie Next List. You will also need to share a text recommendation, which you can add as a Review, once you submit the Opinions page.

The Indie Bestseller List puts the diversity of independent bookstores on display. It is produced just two days after the end of the sales-week, and is the most current snapshot of what’s selling in indie bookstores nationwide.
