Why does my outboard motor keep cutting out?

If your boat motor is fuel injected, a dirty or defective airflow sensor can cause poor engine performance. Cleaning or replacing the airflow sensor may clear up your stalling problems. A dirty carburetor can’t properly regulate the air and fuel mixture that the engine needs to run which can lead to stalling problems.

Why is my outboard turning over but not starting?

If the engine does not turn over at all, the battery may be dead. If you have checked the battery switch and charged the batteries, but your boat engine still won’t start, check the battery cables. Make sure the connections that run between the engine and the battery are not loose or corroded.

What do you do when your outboard won’t start?

Check to see that fuel is getting to the engine. Pump the primer bulb (if equipped) and ensure it gets firm after several squeezes. If it doesn’t, check for leaks in the line, the tank or filter, the engine, and a bad valve within the bulb.

How do I know if my outboard is EFI?

The carb will be right before the cylinder with a fuel line coming into it as well as the air intake running through it. An EFI system will have something sort of similar to regulate airflow but there will not be a fuel line running to it.

What’s the difference between EFI and DFI?

The systems are essentially identical but instead of pumping gas into the air before it goes into the engine as EFI does, DFI systems pump a very precise amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber inside the engine where it then mixes with air just before being set alight by the spark plug.

Why is my outboard hard starting?

Make sure the engine is primed with fuel and choked properly at start if necessary. Improperly connected spark plug wires can make starting your engine difficult. Make certain all spark plug wires are properly connected and free of breaks. Also, check that the distributor cap and rotor are functioning properly.
